Bluetooth 5

Bluetooth 5 now available to device manufacturers, offering 2x speed and 4x range improvements

Earlier this year, it was announced that Bluetooth 5 would be the new wireless standard, replacing Bluetooth 4.2 and now, the Bluetooth Special Interest Group has officially adopted the platform and made it available to manufacturers to use in devices…

Bluetooth 5 includes a variety of enhancements to the wireless technology. The standard offers longer range, faster speeds, and much more, as originally teased over a year ago.
Compared to the Bluetooth 4.2 protocol, Bluetooth 5 offers a range that’s four times longer, meaning that you don’t have to worry as much about moving too far away from a device to which you’re wirelessly connected. Furthermore, Bluetooth 5 offers two times the speed of Bluetooth 4.2, making it faster to transmit data via the technology.
Both of these improvements mean that Bluetooth devices can now provide whole-home and building coverage, as well as be used in a variety of different settings in outdoor, industrial, and commercial environments:
“This means whole-home and building coverage, as well as new use cases for outdoor, industrial, and commercial applications will be a reality. With the launch of Bluetooth 5, we continue to evolve to meet the needs of IoT developers and consumers while staying true to what Bluetooth is at its core: the global wireless standard for simple, secure, connectivity.”
In addition to speed and range improvements, the latest iteration of Bluetooth offers eight times the broadcast message capacity of its predecessor. This, according to the Bluetooth SIG, “increases the data sent for improved and more context relevant solutions.”
Bluetooth 5 also includes refinements that help reduce potential interference with other wireless technologies, which is crucial as we move towards a technological environment that heavily relies on wireless technology.
The Bluetooth SIG heavily touts the Internet of Things improvements that Bluetooth 5 brings. “Bluetooth 5 continues to advance the Internet of Things (IoT) experience by enabling simple and effortless interactions across the vast range of connected devices,” it writes in the press release announcing the next standard.
Bluetooth 5 will start shipping in commercial devices within two to six months, meaning that the next generation of Apple products, including the iPhone, may very well feature the new and improved wireless standard. The full press release is below:
